Health

Henrico County Public Schools strives to be proactive in anticipating school health-care needs. The HCPS Department of School Health Services believes that students thrive in a collaborative, holistic environment. The department communicates regularly with instructors about their students’ needs, and embraces an approach to student health care that is all-inclusive. If students, teachers, staff members or families think someone in the school community needs medical care, please let your school nurse or another member of the School Health Services Department know.

HCPS requires documentary proof of these vaccinations for students entering seventh and 12th grades:

  • Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY): Students must receive at least two doses, the first administered before entering seventh grade and the final administered before entering 12th grade (after their 16th birthday).
  • Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine (Tdap): A booster dose is required for all students entering seventh grade.
  • **Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Effective July 1, 2021, a complete series of 2 doses of HPV vaccine is required. The first dose shall be administered before the child enters the 7th grade. After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parent's or guardian's sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

School Health Advisory Board

The School Health Advisory Board — or SHAB — assists the Henrico County School Board and superintendent develop school health policy, including nutrition and physical activity standards. The SHAB holds at least four public meetings annually and encourages participation by the HCPS community and general public to develop, implement and maintain wellness goals for HCPS students. Every three years, members assess the HCPS wellness program and report findings to the public as part of its annual presentation to the School Board.
