Foster Care
Foster Care Services
At Henrico County Public Schools, we understand that students in foster care may experience transitions and challenges that can affect their education. Our goal is to provide stability, continuity and support so every student can learn, grow and thrive in a safe and welcoming school environment.
HCPS is committed to ensuring that students in foster care receive a free, appropriate public education and the services necessary to promote academic success.
Commitment to school stability
Public schools and local departments of social services are required to collaborate to support students in foster care.
HCPS works in partnership with the local Department of Social Services to:
- Maintain school stability whenever it is in the student’s best interest
- Reduce school disruptions
- Support timely enrollment
- Promote academic progress toward graduation
A stable school experience helps students remain connected to peers, teachers and support systems. When students experience fewer transitions, they are more likely to stay on track academically and pursue postsecondary opportunities.
For information about the enrollment process, families and caseworkers may contact HCPS Foster Care Liaison, Sharron Archer at sparcher@henrico.k12.va.us or 804-652-3747. Additional information, including required forms, is available through the Virginia Department of Education.
