Family and Community Engagement

The Henrico County Public Schools Division of Family and Community Engagement — or FACE — is an essential bridge between HCPS and the broader community. At the core of its mission is the integration of the community school framework, ensuring a comprehensive approach to education that extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. FACE strives to create a collaborative ecosystem where schools, families and the community work together to create a supportive and enriching educational environment. By emphasizing both family and community engagement, the division promotes a holistic approach to student achievement and supportive family structures. Key components of the Division of Family and Community Engagement include:

  • FACE helps cultivate collaborative relationships with community organizations and stakeholders to enrich the educational experience and provide diverse opportunities for students.

  • The Family Resource Center is a hub for families to access valuable resources, information and support services that contribute to their active involvement in their child's education.

  • HCPS' mentorship program helps connect students with positive role models from the community, fostering personal and academic growth.

  • After-school options — including 21st Century Community Learning Center sites — provide enriching and structured activities beyond regular school hours, enhancing the overall learning experience and supporting families as they balance work and child care responsibilities.

BUILD: We build relationships and resource-rich school communities.

Our team is responsive to the unique needs of Henrico County’s diverse magisterial districts. Family advocates are based in many schools to ensure that the right to achieve for all Henrico students is a priority.

BRIDGE: We bridge high-impact partnerships.

We understand that it takes a village, and build partnerships that best benefit our students, staff and families. Strategic collaborations enhance our learning communities and the educational experiences of our learners.

BOOST: We boost integrated family involvement and engagement.

With a focus on fun and informative programming opportunities, we strengthen families by supporting their students and schools. We have a family-focused approach, often weaving family voices throughout our processes and decision-making.

Bridge Builders Academy

Bridge Bilders Academy logo

Henrico County Public Schools’ Bridge Builders Academy features virtual gatherings and discussions on a host of topics — many related to predominantly virtual learning. Our “Community Conversations” panel discussions about racial equity and change was a popular and powerful addition to the series. The Bridge Builders Academy is presented by HCPS’ Division of Family and Community Engagement and the HCPS Family and Educator Resource Center. Check out videos of past sessions at our Bridge Builders Academy page, where you’ll also find details about upcoming sessions. For more information about the Family And Educator Resource Center, visit the center’s webpage.

HCPS Rolling Resource Center

Since its debut in July 2017, our rolling resource center has provided students and families with books, “make-and-take” activities, information about exceptional education and other resources. Check back for updates about resource center appearances.

Community Learning Center hubs

Our Community Learning Center initiative leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities. Henrico County Public Schools has partnered with the Henrico Education Foundation to transform schools into hubs where children and families have onsite support from community partners at their disposal. CLC hubs provide an integrated focus on academics, health services, social services, youth and community development, and community engagement. The hubs provide a wealth of opportunities and resources to give students and parents the tools they need to learn and grow.

Our current CLC hub sites — Glen Lea and Harold Ratcliffe elementary schools, and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School — offer personalized curricula that emphasize real-world learning and community problem-solving. What are some of the benefits of Community Learning Center hubs?

  • Students attend school more consistently.
  • Students succeed academically.
  • Students are actively involved in learning.
  • Families are increasingly involved with their children’s education.
  • Schools are engaged with families and communities.
  • Students live and learn in a safe, supportive and stable environment.
  • Communities prosper and become more desirable places to live.
