Alternative Fuels
Alternative Fuels
Henrico is committed to building a cleaner, healthier future by investing in alternative fuel transportation. Our fleet currently includes 20 propane-powered buses, with 20 electric buses set to be added in the upcoming school year. This transition reflects our dedication to reducing environmental impact while enhancing the safety and comfort of our students and community.
Diesel exhaust is internationally recognized as a cancer-causing agent and poses significant health risks. By shifting to electric and propane vehicles, Henrico is actively reducing harmful emissions, improving air quality, and creating a safer transportation experience.
Benefits of Electric Vehicles (EVs)
- Lower Operating Costs
Electric school buses are up to 60% less expensive to operate and maintain. - Reduced Environmental Impact
Replacing just one diesel bus with an electric bus prevents approximately 54,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions each year. - Zero Emissions
Electric buses are 100% battery-powered with no tailpipe emissions, reducing exposure to harmful pollutants and improving air quality. - Enhanced Student Experience
Electric buses provide a quieter, smoother ride, contributing to a more comfortable and safer environment for students. - Healthier for Students and Drivers
Unlike diesel, electric vehicles eliminate toxic tailpipe emissions, which improves air quality for children and drivers while reducing asthma risks. Additionally, since it is very quiet it can improve communication and awareness for both drivers and students.
Benefits of Propane Vehicles
-
Propane costs roughly half as much as diesel, allowing districts to reinvest savings into education, staff, and resources.
-
Propane buses require less maintenance than diesel vehicles. Without complex emissions systems or particulate filters, fleets experience less downtime and reduce labor costs.
-
Propane buses reduce smog-producing hydrocarbons by up to 80% compared to diesel, helping to protect the environment and community health.
-
Unlike diesel, propane produces little to no odor or particulate matter, reducing respiratory risks such as asthma. Additionally, quieter engines improve communication and awareness for both drivers and students.
-
Propane fueling stations can be installed on-site, saving time, reducing fuel-related travel, and increasing operational efficiency.
-
Propane engines start quickly in cold conditions without the need for extended idling or fuel additives, ensuring consistent performance year-round.
Where are these vehicles located throughout the County?
Our vehicles are distributed across the areas we serve to ensure efficient coverage. Below is the number of propane buses assigned to each area:
- Area 1 (East): 3 propane buses
- Area 2 (North): 5 propane buses
- Area 3 (Northwest): 6 propane buses
- Area 4 (West): 3 propane buses
- Area 5 (Northeast): 3 propane buses
